The Dell 23PKM Page!!!
The 23PKM is Dell's 2nd Generation Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor (KMM) unit. The first generation was a 2u monster that weighed over 70 pounds. The 2nd generation 23PKM weighs about 45 pounds shipped, and about 40 pounds installed in a Dell rack. These have been officially discontinued by Dell as of last year and replaced by the "3rd generation" 4u123 and 4u125. The 2nd generation and 3rd generation are both 1u tall. The main difference is the size of the screen. The 23PKM has a 14.1 inch LCD with dell part numbers of either 6h507 or 0636u and "catalog number" of SL-340 while the 3rd generation units have a 15 inch lcd display.
Many of the 23PKM LCD displays are starting to grow dim or "reddish". The red or pinkish colors are noticed at first startup of the display and gradually last longer. Eventually the display goes completely dark. These are signs of a backlight that has reached the end of its life. Occasionally a dark display is also caused by a LCD inverter that has failed.
At Elm Creek Computer, we specialize in replacing backlights from the 23PKM LCD screens. Replacing the backlight is not a Do-It-Yourself task for most people. The backlights themselves are extremely fragile and high voltages are present when testing the old and new backlights and LCD inverter. The backlight itself is basically a fluorescent light bulb scaled down to about 1 foot long and 1/16" in diameter.
The backlight is not always the problem. The LCD inverter will occasionally fail. One of the failure modes causes the low voltage capacitor next to the step-up transformer to to fail, often with an obvious hole and a burned spot on the back side of the circuit board. Replacing the capacitor by itself will not fix the problem.
In most cases we can replace the backlight or repair the Inverter with a two day turn around time for $150.00. This includes return shipping. For those of you feeling adventurous, we can sell the backlight itself for $75.00 including shipping. We don't offer any instructions, warranty, or anything else with this offer. There are some inverter problems we can't yet repair. On these occasions, we will replace your inverter with one of our stock inverters for the same price.

Our refurbished 23PKM includes the 14.1 inch LCD display, Keyboard and Mouse. A video, keyboard, and mouse extender cables are also included. Two mounting rails for Racks with Square mounting holes are included. We don't carry rails for racks with round mounting holes but we can offer these kits without rails for $50 less. Third party rail kits are available on the internet.
Our standard warranty on these is 30 days from the time of receipt.
